Gravy is one of those foods that's more of a category than a food. To some, it's thin and watery. To others, it's chunky. It could be brown, white, or cream, and you can put it on biscuits or turkey. It's sort of just a catch-all word for "savory sauce that makes something taste good." So it's no wonder that we get the phrase "As good as gravy." That's its very purpose. It doesn't add anything to the meal nutritionally, it's just supposed to be delicious. It's also how we get the idiom "The rest is just gravy."
Some would say that memes are the gravy of the internet. Sure, we don't need them structurally, but they sure are nice to have as a treat. However another might argue that memes are just as essential to the internet as turkey is to Thanksgiving dinner. Either way, I'm eating 'em up with a spoon.
