Happy Winter Solstice, everybody! Now everybody can stop complaining about it getting darker every night because after today, the sun will start to set a little earlier every night until June 21st. There's been a lot of talk about abolishing Daylight Savings Time in the United States because everyone is too seasonally depressed to handle a little darkness in the evening. I don't think that's a good idea because it would leave the winter evenings functionally identical to how they are now and make the summer evenings bright for a shorter amount of time. The classic response to that argument is that we should make Daylight Savings Time permanent and abolish Standard Time, but that seems unlikely to me.
Everyone claims to want less daylight in the morning and more daylight in the evening, but if you only want your computer light to show you some funny memes, you're my kind of person.
