It's funny that dogs became the most common companions of human beings and not other animals. Imagine a world in which everyone had huge domesticated lizards on leashes walking around the park. That would be pretty cool. Or if we had parrot parks instead of dog parks. They'd probably talk to each other and learn new English words. That might be unsettling. Or what if we all had a pet elephant that protected us wherever we went, stomping on our enemies and spraying them with their noses? An interesting, if a little cruel, idea.
But no, humans are drawn to fur for some reason. Probably because it's nice to feel in our hands. If it was just some luck of the evolution draw, or if there was some pre-ordained connection between us, humans and dogs are the perfect match. Just keep your dog humble by saying that you might replace him with a possum.
