Back in the day, kings and queens (and other wealthy folks) were entertained by jesters and jokers to get their laughs in. Humor might not look the same as it once did hundreds of years ago, but the DNA of comedy has remained the same. We either make jokes at the expense of ourselves or at the expense of others. That's human comedy right there.
As humor evolves, though, we're learning that the joy is most prevalent in classic memes. I don't make the rules. Life is short and fleeting, so we might as well have a royally funny time while we're here. Unlike jesters (who'd most likely get canned if they made fun of their ruler), people on the internet can basically say whatever they want without repercussions (within limits).
